Historical introduction

The Piana Rotaliana is classically suited for the production of Pinot Grigio, as historical documents attest. In the Almanacco Agrario of 1883, a technical publication of the Istituto Agrario di San Michele all'Adige, the researcher Mader recommends Pinot Grigio as a variety that improves the viticultural heritage of the time, since it gives abundant and uniform harvests and a very "fine" white wine.
The lands of Pinot Grigio and the alpine climate

The area was first cultivated with vines in the 1950s, the soils have a limited growing stock and a rather shallow water table between 50 and 100cm, plus the soil type is loamy. The soils have sufficient water supply even in times of drought and good fertility, indispensable characteristics for Pinot Grigio. In addition, the area is sheltered from cold winds in the late winter and early spring, as it is set against imposing rock walls and has a warming effect during the vegetative phases, reflecting the heat of the sun.

Trentino-Alto Adige stands out for the extraordinary quality-grape ratio of Pinot Grigio wine, guaranteeing consistent quality for several reasons. Firstly, Trentino's Alpine climate shapes its character, making its aromas and fragrances unique and producing grapes with a perfect balance of aromas, acidity and freshness. The large difference in temperature between day and night then brings about a higher level of final acidity that gives the wine momentum.

The mountain breezes that blow over the Adige Valley, a river that flows throughout the Trentino region, help keep humidity low, preventing the formation of mould and fungus and preserving healthy, vigorous grapes.

Hand-harvesting and the typical pergola cultivation system

The pergola is the traditional Trentino cultivation system that offers numerous advantages: the sloping and expanded leaf surface favours good light absorption for energy production. In addition, it acts as a cover from direct light to avoid scorching during ripening. This cultivation system involves only manual work, especially during harvesting procedures.

The Mezzacorona Pinot Grigio is harvested 100% by hand. Therefore, there are no crushed grapes and no oxidation of flavours or loss of aromas occurs. In addition, the hygiene of the grapes is completely preserved.

The quality of Pinot Grigio DOC

The Mezzacorona system sets high quality standards and strict quality criteria. The main indicator is the sugar level at harvest which, if respected, allows for a perfect balance between aromatic profile, acidity level and freshness. Each cultivation area is unique, with different exposure to environmental variables and, consequently, different potential. Based on this knowledge, Mezzacorona controls the production yield of each zone, aiming at its standard of quality.

The wine

Pinot Grigio is a wine that fully reveals its Trentino character, exuding aromas of chamomile, pear and jasmine. Characterised by a fragrant and fresh bouquet, its cluster is composed of small, dark-coloured berries, compact and guarded by a thick skin that protects their juice.
