In the 1980s Mezzacorona became promoter for the "Protocol of quality in vine production in Trentino" which was set up to control the methods of cultivation, the new vineyards and the upkeep of green areas and sustainable agriculture.
Nowadays this protocol controls the grape production in 90% of the Trentino region which means every agricultural member of Mezzacorona follows a regime of high quality wine growing which safeguards and respects our beautiful environment.
A technical commission checks that this protocol is respected and thoroughly tests any new method or product before allowing it to be introduced onto the land. In terms of security and sustainability Mezzacorona adopts and elaborates any form of improvement. Expert agronomists work alongside the farmers in making decisions and keeping up to date with technological progress; the farmers benefit first hand from clean and safe techniques with the countryside being their home.
The use of chemicals has been greatly reduced and throughout the years alternative methods have been adopted such as the correct use of copper and sulphur (also used in organic farming), the introduction of beneficial insects in thevineyards and the use of "reproductive confusion". This is a biological system of combatting harmful insects by limiting reproduction through the use of pheromones ("reproductive scents"which prevent the harmful male insect from finding and fertilising the female).Constant care of the plant achieves excellent natural ventilation and phytosanitary protection for the bunches.
Much care goes into the positioning of the vines and thoroughly studying the land itself.
Mezzacorona is also involved in producing clean and renewable sources of energy with the aim of becoming self sufficient in this field. Most of the wine cellars are underground in a way to maintain a steady low temperature. Solar and photovoltaic panels produce over 2 million KW per year and most of the energy required is supplied by hydroelectric sources. Drip irrigation systems maximize the efficiency of the water supplyand avoid waste by guaranteeing that the water is used only where required.
Great care is taken to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by using locally produced supplies and materials as far as possible and all types of refuse is separated accordingly whenever possible in order to reduce the amount of waste.
